Dan Goffredo earned a pair of state bronze medals as one of the anchors in Easton’s middle and upperweights and formed a dynamic duo with classmate Moss Grays.

Goffredo earned a varsity spot as a sophomore, entering the Crestwood Invitational at 145 pounds.  He was boxed out of the lineup for December and early January as Tony Rizzolino came down to 145, but found himself the starter when Moss Grays dropped to 132.  Goffredo earned his first varsity win with a 14-6 major of Jason Richards (Northampton), then earned a pair of tech falls at the Reilly Duals.  He ran his winning streak to seven before dropping a match to Jason Elke (Phillipsburg) in a loss to the Stateliners.  He entered the postseason 16-5 as one of the favorites at 138.  Goffredo won his first two matches before hitting future two-time state champ Mike Miller (Nazareth) in the semifinals.  Miller proved too much on his feet in a 13-9 win.  Goffredo won his consolation semifinal to extend his season, but was taken down to his back in a 6-1 loss to Paglusch (Pocono Mountain) to finish fourth and miss a trip to Regionals.

As a junior, Goffredo opened the season at 152 with a runner-up finish at the Crestwood Invitational.  He dropped a match to Miller in their dual with Nazareth and tied 2A D11 champ Anthony Spagnola (Bethlehem Catholic).  Goffredo took fourth at Manheim, then went 1-1 at Reilly Duals, teching Don Kulp (Souderton) before getting pinned by state champ Rich Catalano (North Allegheny).  Goffredo majored Dave Robatin (Shikellamy) in the Red Rovers dual victory over the Braves.  He throttled future NCAA qualified and muliti-time state medalist Howie MIller (Parkland) 9-2, then pinned Jody Crouse (Phililpsburg) in a win over the Stateliners.  At the D11 tournament, Goffredo pinned and majored his way into semifinals, where he faced Mike Miller (Nazareth) for a third time in their careers.  Goffredo closed the gap from their 11-5 match back in December, but the Blue Eagle prevailed 6-4.  Goffredo wrestled back for third.  At Northeast Regionals, Goffredo knocked off Rob Everett (Coughlin) and Kurt Brungard (Jersey Shore) to get a rematch with Miller.  This time, Miller scored both takedowns in a 5-2 win.  At the state tournament, Goffredo opened with a decision of Chris Bomo (Burrell), but fell to unbeaten Chad Pines (Cedar Cliff) in a 15-6 major in quarters.  Then, Goffredo caught fire on the back side.  He beat Chad Halstead (Southmoreland), Marc Petroski (Springfield Delco), and Scott Martin (Warwick) to wrestle all the way to the consolation final.  There, he got a rematch with Pines, and scored all of the offensive points in a 6-3 win for a bronze medal.  That evening, Mike Miller won the state title, placing D11 1st and 3rd in the bracket.

Goffredo returned as a senior as one of the favorites for a state title.  He opened the season with a runner-up finish at Crestwood, losing in the final to Easton legacy and 2A state champion Bob Ferraro Jr. (Lewisburg).  He hammered future state finalist Dan Madson (Nazareth) in their dual with the Blue Eagles before rolling to a Manheim title at the end of the month, avenging a 1988 Manheim loss to Torri Fetzner (Erie Cathedral Prep) by beating him 7-6 in the finals.  He ran roughshod through the rest of the regular season schedule, finishing with eight tech falls to place him amongst the state leaders.  He entered the D11 tournament 25-1 and was the heavy favorite to win 171 pounds.  He opened with a quarterfinal tech, then cruised to a 9-5 win in the semis.  In the finals, Goffredo dominated Dan Madson (Nazareth) for his first D11 title, outsourcing the precocious Blue Eagle 7-1.  The following weekend, Goffredo was even more dominant, outsourcing the field 37-6 for a Northeast Regional title, capped by his third win of the season over state semifinalist Chad Lytle (Shikellamy) in a 7-2 laugher.  Goffredo was one of the favorites in Hershey, though his draw included returning state finalist (and future Arena Football League Hall of Famer) Greg Hopkins (Waynesburg) in the quarterfinals.  He opened with a major of Bill Smith (Phoenixville) to set up one of the premier quarters of the tournament.  Goffredo took control with three takedowns in the second period to go up 7-3.  Hopkins clawed back to within a point, but Goffredo defended for the final thirty seconds and held off Hopkins for an 8-7 win.  That set up a semifinal with undefeated Tony DeHaven (Conestoga).  Here, Goffredo met his match.  He struggled with the upper body throws of DeHaven, and fell 10-7 to miss making the finals.  On the back side, Goffredo handled Shawn Armbust (Mount Pleasant) to set up a rematch with Hopkins for third place.  Once again, Goffredo scored a pair of second period takedowns, which held up in a 4-3 win for his second career PIAA bronze medal.

After Easton, Goffredo wrestled at Duke where he had an injury plagued, but successful career.  He was 14-3 as a freshman before a knee injury ended his season, and then was 11-2 as a sophomore before a broken ankle finished his campaign.  His only postseason was a third place finish in the ACC as a senior.  He came back to teach history and coach the junior high program at Easton before moving onto a career in academic administration, first as a principal, now as superintendent of the Great Valley School District.
